For Immediate Release
Durango, Co. May 8, 2018---Eric Hoffer Independent Book Awards Shortlist Announced
This morning, Colorado Travel Writer, Donna Stewart’s novel “Yoga Mama’s Buddha Sandals: Mayans, Zapatistas, and Silly Little White Girls,” was shortlisted for the Eric Hoffer Independent Book Award.
The Eric Hoffer Award honors the memory of the great American philosopher Eric Hoffer. Founded at the start of the 21st century, this international award honors freethinking writers and independent books of exceptional merit from small, academic and micro presses, including self-published offerings.
“Yoga Mama’s Buddha Sandals: Mayans, Zapatistas and Silly Little White Girls” is a coming-of-cultural-age travelogue about a troubled young woman who travels to the most remote jungles of Chiapas, Mexico, woefully unprepared. Drawn to the area to visit remote ancient ruins, she learns three very important lessons: There is NOT always someone around who speaks English; American Express Traveler’s Checks are NOT accepted anywhere you are; and it takes a lot of scraping to remove the barnacles of your past. For Donna Stewart, one of these was racial prejudices she never realized she carried until she was forced to trust people she’d been told all her life she couldn’t.
Donna Stewart is a freelance writer and novelist who lives with her family in Durango, Colorado. She thrives on three things: the love of her family, the love of adventure, and the love of learning.
Winners and finalists of the Eric Hoffer Award are determined based on salient writing and are intended to highlight and honor freethinking writers and independent books of exceptional merit. Grand prize winners for the Eric Hoffer Award will be announced May 14, 2018.
